Carolyn Zara, RN, BSN, MSN, PNP, WHCNP, IBCLC, RLC, has been an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Registered Lactation Consultant (RLC) since 1985.  She is a pioneer in her field, working with breastfeeding mothers and babies since 1972 and sitting for the first IBCLC examination in 1985.

Carolyn is a Registered Advanced Practice Nurse delivering care as a Maternal Child Health Clinical Nurse Specialist, Maternal and Infant Development Specialist, Clinical Infant Feeding Specialist and board certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner.  She also holds certification as a Lamaze Childbirth Educator, Infant Massage Instructor and “Happiest Baby Instructor.” 

In 1985, she helped to develop the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) and became the founding president of Ohio Lactation Consultant Association (OLCA). Her many years of experience includes working as a Lactation Consultant and Clinical Lactation Nurse Specialist for hospitals, physician’s offices, WIC, public health and maternity and newborn home health care.

Carolyn has created hospital breastfeeding programs with on-going staff education and breastfeeding standards of care, protocols, policies, procedures, critical pathways, chart forms, surveys, assessment and evaluation tools, quality assurance, breastfeeding equipment for patient services and patient breastfeeding education literature.

Through these programs and her efforts, Carolyn has been able to demonstrate a significant increase in the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding, as well as improved overall patient satisfaction.

Carolyn is currently in private practice as an Advanced Practice Nurse at Mothering Touch Mother-Baby Services where she operates her own medical office, focusing on her passion – breastfeeding assistance and mother-baby services.  It is with love and devotion that she has dedicated her life to helping mothers and babies breastfeed.
